Once all other methods of contraception have been considered and a woman wishes to proceed. Consultation and the procedure can be organised quickly.

It is of course important that women are absolutely sure that their family is complete; consider current and potential future social circumstances when making this choice. Some women make this decision individually and some with their partner. Women should consider surgical sterilization techniques as effectively irreversible, these do not effect their baseline menstrual (period) pattern, their hormones, can increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy, all have risks and a failure rate.

When considering options a women / the couple must be aware of the failure rates, no technique is 100%! Male vasectomy is by far the most effective form of sterilization with a failure rate of approximately 1 in 2000. The safest, most effective female sterilization procedure currently available and my preferred technique is Hysteroscopic “Essure” Sterilization, this has a failure rate of approximately 1 in 500. This is vastly superior to the more commonly practiced “Laparoscopic Tubal Ligation” which has a failure rate of 1 in 200 approximately the same as the “Mirena coil”. In light off this and with its advantages in reducing heavy periods the Mirena coil should be given consideration before a women makes her choice.

Below is a video animation demonstrating the Essure Sterilization Procedure.
