A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the womb (uterus). A hysterectomy is still a major operation, it is only considered after alternative, less invasive, treatments such as medical treatment, mirena coil and endometrial ablation have been considered. Dr Johnston will discuss all these options and the surgery with you, make sure you have complete understanding of the procedure and what to expect in the post operative period.

Hysterectomies are carried out to treat conditions that affect the female reproductive system, including

  • Heavy, painful or irregular periods
  • Failed treatment with mirena coil and / or endometrial ablation
  • Long-term pelvic pain
  • Endometriosis and adenomysosis
  • non-cancerous tumours (fibroids)
  • ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, cervical cancer or cancer of the fallopian tubes
The risks and benefits of Hysterectomy are weighed up on an individual patient basis & depend on the type and severity of the problems that are affecting the patient. Dr Johnston will discuss the chances of the surgery improving your individual quality of life.
