Mirena Coil Insertion

Mirena coils can be inserted at an outpatient clinic or if this is not possible as a very short procedure in day surgery. Mirena Coils have two main uses.

  • As an excellent contraception.
  • To treat heavy and painful periods where approximately 7 out of 10 women find a great improvement.
This coils releases a minute amount of a hormone called levonorgestrel (a progesterone) into the lining of the womb thinning it significantly, thus giving its beneficial properties for reducing heavy periods. There is a misconception that as a hormone is involved with this device, women can have significant hormonal side effects. This is not the case, the hormone released is mainly into the womb and hormonal side effects are rare.It is also beneficial for the treatment of conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and endometrial hyperplasia (a condition which can lead to entometrial cancer).

These coils last for 5 years and are fully reversible i.e. once removed a women’s fertility returns almost immediately. Six weeks after insertion the coil strings require to be checked usually by the same person who performs your smear. This check is to ensure the coil has remained in position.
